Section 26Dealing with Media
Enquiries
1.
Child
abuse is an issue which will quite correctly generate media interest.
The RFU has developed a comprehensive training and certification
programme for those working with young people in rugby and has a
regional media team who can help deal with media enquiries.
2.
The
Mini/Junior section will appoint a ‘Press Officer’ for the section to
handle all general media enquiries;
3.
All such
enquiries will be dealt with in a way that will not aggravate the
situation or generate negative publicity.
4.
Care
will be taken not to name any young people to avoid the possibility of
breaching any relevant legislation preventing the identification of
young people in the media.
5.
If
approached by a journalist about an issue affecting the club or one of
the young people, a coach should refer them to the Press Officer after
making sure that they made a note of the name of the journalist and the
media they are working for;
when
responding to press enquiries concerning potential child abuse cases,
the Press Officer will seek advice from the RFU Regional Press Officer
(Murray Walker Northern RPO, Mob: 07734 683835, Email:
murraywalker@rfu.com) who will, in turn, inform Steve Farr, the RFU’s
Ethics and Equity Manager, who will formulate an appropriate response
and then respond to the journalist, copying his response to the Club’s
Press Officer.
