MATCH REPORT

GRUFC 1ST 1V versus WHITLEY BAY ROCKLIFFE

Home match, league fixture D&N2.

On a grey day at Belmongate, it looked like guisborough were hungry for a win.

The ball was worked well up to the 22, but a series of penalties took the ball back to the oppositions 22, where Rockliffe missed a penalty kick given for a line out infringement.  Rockliffe continued to apply pressure as did the penalties.  However, the Guisborough defences held well with no 10 Tom Rose, kicking the ball safely into touch, and allowing some breathing space for Guisborough. The game changed as Guisborough made it to the 22 and a bumbled ball was picked up by no 13 Des Horton, who touched down, with Mark George converting.  Play continued to be hard fought to the half time whistle.

Half time score Guisborough 7 Whitley Bay Rockliffe 0

Rockliffe pressured Guisborough from the whistle, and a string of passes along the backs, allowed no 11 to touch down, but the conversion fell short.  Not deterred, Guisborough made a break, with Aran Motson making a dart for the line.  Unfortunately, the ref blew for a previous knock on, taking the ball back to the half way line.  A dubious decision gave Rockliffe a penalty, but the kick for goal went wide and left.  A phase of scrappy play followed allowing Rockliffes no 11 to collect the ball and stumble over the line.  The conversion went wide and left.  Guisborough were determined to keep up the pressure.  The Scrum half picked up from the back of the scrum, 10 metres from the line and passed to Paul Towers who barged over the line and touched down.  The conversion went wide and right.  Whitley bay Rockliffe took control, and no 12 took a tackle on the line, but reached over to score: no 5 converted.  Guisborough looked to equalise when a lineout at 15 metres was retained, but the ball was taken into touch by the Rockliffe line.  The lineout that followed was won by Guisborough, and no 8 Matthew Flint went over the line but was unable to ground the ball.  A penalty kick to Rockliffe a good kick into touch, way up the line.  This took them out of danger with 4 minutes to go.
